Part of the requirements for a Master's Degree in Music Education is the completion of a capstone project that could be useful to choral music educators. As a middle school choir director, finding repertoire that is fulfilling to me and also holds my students' interest is often quite challenging. When listening to middle school choirs on YouTube, it is easy to find ensembles singing similar repertoire, which is what I want to avoid as a professional educator. I enjoy finding new composers who understand the middle school voice and who write intriguing music that transcends the standard "been there, done that" texts and simple harmonies that often lead to disengaged singers.
This capstone project is a comprehensive list of repertoire that features music that I have either performed with my students or have studied, and therefore deem it something exciting and engaging for middle school choral students. The list is separated into separate voicings: two-part/SA, SSA, three-part mixed, SAB, and SATB. Most lists contain concert, holiday, and pop repertoire suggestions. Also included next to each item is a link to an audio recording of the piece, and often includes a complete or partial preview score.
I invite users to reach out with suggestions for additions to this list. I am always eager to find and share new and exciting music that teachers and students will enjoy for years to come.
Enjoy!
